Case Ref: 200700787 - East Dunbartonshire Council

This complaint concerned a child who was injured on a school trip. His mother felt that the school did not take appropriate action following the injury and that she was not been given a full explanation of what had happened either by the school or East Dunbartonshire Council - the local education authority.

In considering the complaint, the complaints investigator found that the Council had carried out high quality investigations into the complaint.  Despite delays owing to school holidays, the complainant was kept well-informed and up to date with progress. The Council also met with the complainant, carried out a site visit of where the incident took place, appointed a more independent investigator and critically assessed prior responses to the complaint by the school and council officials, rather than just accepting them. This demonstrates that the complainant's concerns were taken seriously, that there was a high standard of investigation and, above all, a commitment to thorough complaints handling.

In addition, the complaint brought around an appropriate change in the school's procedure to ensure that a similar situation would not occur.

This complaint did not progress to full investigation.
